Agentic payments — payments initiated by an AI agent rather than a human — moved from prototype to production this year. Three rails define the stack: x402 (HTTP-based, using the 402 status code), Google's AP2, and Coinbase AgentKit for onchain payments. Each lets an agent discover a payable resource and settle it autonomously.
What's real
All three rails are live and shipping products. The pattern is consistent: an agent requests a resource, the rail presents payment terms, the agent settles, and the resource unlocks. Settlement is fast — seconds, not days — which is exactly why the next layer matters.
What's missing
Rails move money; none of them screen transactions before settlement. A runaway agent on a fast rail is damage at settlement speed — the incident database already contains the shapes this takes. The control layer — a deterministic pre-spend decision in front of the rail — is where the stack is immature, and where the firewall pattern fits.
What ships next
Expect the rails to consolidate around standards, and expect the control layer to become a default part of the stack — the same way fraud screening became default for card payments. The protocol is the plumbing; the policy is the product.
